MADONNA: WILD ANGEL – AN UNAUTHORIZED BIOGRAPHY Eagle Media Reviewed by Ellen Rosner Feig

Yet another film about Madonna. Do we really all care that much about her?
Personally, while I appreciate her ambition and success, I don’t find her to be all that talented. But that aside, the film biography, Madonna: Wild Angel, An Unauthorized Biography, is clearly a low budget attempt to cash in on the Madonna obsession. The film, narrated by an annoying woman whose voice drones on, uses unauthorized video and photo clippings. From the start, it is clear that the film will not only take to issue Madonna’s success but her infamy.
The film begins with a Madonna look-alike, a woman who appears to be over 50, with a strong British accent. We will see her again and again as she acts out scenes from Madonna’s life; an annoying technique. Clearly unable to obtain first hand interviews from family or friends, the film relies solely on archival footage, much of which is grainy. Interviews are with second rate biographers, journalists, fans and look-alikes and are shot in poor light. One of the “best” scenes in the film is when a visual of Madonna in her “Like a Virgin” outfit appears and the narrator states, “Madonna knew how to get attention. Show your panties.”
Urgh. Nothing new is learned, nothing intriguing identified. If you really love Madonna, spend some time watching the documentaries she actually appears in. Don’t bother wasting your time with this DVD. | |
