Who He Is:
Before getting his show business start on Saturday Night Live in 1976 (replacing Chevy Chase), Bill Murray was a member of the famed Second City comedy troupe in Chicago. He also joined his brother Brian Doyle-Murray and SNL co-star John Belushi on The National Lampoon Radio Hour, which was what initially brought him to New York. Since leaving Saturday Night Live in 1980 he has been a film actor, mostly known for quirky 1980s comedies.
How To Spot Him:
Although he briefly sported a moustache in the mid-1970s, and wore a beard for 2004’s The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Bill Murray is usually clean shaven with ruffled-up white (formerly brown) hair. Typically it’s the loud dialogue and deadpan delivery that grabs your attention, though.
Vital Fact:
Bill Murray has eight siblings. He has frequently appeared with his older brother Brian Doyle-Murray, who most memorably played Mayor Buster Green in Groundhog Day and the Lou Loomis in Caddyshack. Brian is also an alumnus of both Second City and Saturday Night Live. Bill’s other brothers John and Joel both appeared, along with Bill and Brian, in 1988’s Scrooged, and the four Murray brothers were also featured in the short-lived Comedy Central series The Sweet Spot, which focused on their shared love of golf.
Not So Vital Fact:
Bill Murray is such a fan of golf, that his 2000 autobiography is entitled Cinderella Story: My Life in Golf, and focuses largely on Murray’s passion for the sport, with little focus on movies or show business.
